Get ready to break a sweat, strengthen your body and burn calories while having fun! This class brings a cardiovascular workout using upbeat music and an aerobic step. Includes smooth dances such as Foxtrot and Tango, as well as rhythm dances such as Country Western 2-step, Swing, Salsa, Hustle and Cha Cha. Meet new people, stay active, reduce stress and develop body awareness with this fun class. Go to your next party and actually be able to get up and DANCE! If you are staying on top of fitness trends, you know that barre workouts, which are designed to give you a long, lean dancer-like physique, are all the rage! While all barre workouts differ slightly in structure, most combine elements of ballet, Pilates and yoga. Barre exercises rely mainly upon one’s body weight for resistance and the moves challenge your core stability and balance. Taught by Certified Instructor Becca Masters. Cost is $30 per session. Pre-registration is required; however, walk-ins are welcome at a $8 per class fee. If you are looking for a fun, creative outlet, try one of our ceramic classes. It provides a great way to get away and meet friends, all while making some unique projects for yourself or gifts for others. We offer pre-registered specialty classes as well as open classes, held in the Ceramics Room at the Civic Auditorium. The fee of the specialty classes varies per project and includes everything necessary to complete the project. The cost is $6 per class during the open classes. Open classes for Winter/Spring 2018 will be held on January 27, March 17, April 4, and May 5. The Comic Book Project ™
The Comic Book Project™ is a world-renowned literacy initiative that has engaged more than 200,000 learners in a creative process leading to academic achievement, social awareness and community development. By engaging youths in brainstorming, sketching, plotting, designing and publishing original comic books, CBP encourages students to become active learners and content creators, rather than mere information receivers. The cost is $150 for 15 sessions (twice a week) on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. at Cummings Lodge. Our first workshop is offered to grades 4-6 beginning January 8. Our second workshop is offered to grades 7-10 beginning March 15. At finish, an exhibit celebration will be held at the La Porte County Public Library. Pre-registration is required. Flyer
KidzArts Program offers children the opportunity to explore their creativity and artistic selves in a fun, nurturing environment. Fine art fundamentals and a wide variety of media and styles of famous artists will be explored. Projects include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and recycled art. Each program will ask young artists to volunteer what they think is their best KidzArt project of display at a TBA local venue. KidzArts I is for children 2nd-5th grade/ages 7-10. The session will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. at Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park from January 10 through February 28. KidzArts II is for children 6th-9th grad/ages 12-15. The session will be held on Wednesday and Thursdays beginning March 7 through May 16 (no class held on March 28, 29, April 4, 5, 11, and May 3). Kooking with Kids
This five week cooking class is a fun, interactive cooking class that provides a hands-on experience for children in cooking/preparing healthy dishes and snacks with the five food groups. Kids cooking programs are a fantastic way to get kids interested and even excited about healthy foods. Participants have the opportunity to create healthy meals that teach kids important math and reading skills as they follow recipes and measure ingredients. Children will learn about food safety and meal planning in a fun, interactive way. The class will be lead by Rachel Braund who has a Family and Consumer Science degree from Purdue University and currently teaches Nutrition and Wellness at La Porte High School. The cost of the program is $35 and open to current middle school students. The class is held on Tuesdays from May 1 through 29 from 5-7 p.m. in the Civic Auditorium's kitchen (lower level-use door at the end of ramp on Plain Street). Music For Me
Music exploration helps children increase their thinking and language skills, control and strengthen their bodies, become aware of where they are in time and space, follow directions and gain confidence and emotional intelligence. Your child will be making music with instruments as they learn what each instrument is called and discover what fine musicians they are. Along with covering basic music theory, the Music for Me classes promote development in speech, cognition, fine and gross motor, self-help, and social/emotional skills. This developmental music class is for children birth through age 5. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in the fun. The tuition for the six-week session is $30. Explore, capture, create. Want to learn the fundamentals of photography? Have questions about your camera? Learn how to shoot photos like a professional from self-taught photographer Larry Noel. Pottery - Wheel Throwing The art of wheel throwing is both a therapeutic and expressive way to create pottery. This class focuses solely on techniques in throwing clay forms on a pottery wheel. During the seven-week class, students will learn to apply aesthetics, proper thickness and craftsmanship needed to make functional pottery. You'll be guided by local artist Alayna Bublitz who has a Bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics. Learn the process of making, decorating and glazing your work. A class for all skill levels. The fee for the program is $74. We offer an adults class (ages 16 and up) on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. All classes are held in the Ceramics Room in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium (use the ramp at the Plain Street entrance). You'll be guided by local artist Alayna Bublitz who has a bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics. Learn the process of making, decorating and glazing your work. Strengthen While Stretching
No weights or equipment are required for this gentle, safe, low-impact workout that is respectful to the body. Participants will improve posture, increase flexibility, rebalance the body, relieving pain and scar tissue in joints and muscles, all while promoting a healthy cardiovascular system. Chairs will be provided for participants wishing to use them. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11-11:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium (use the ramp at the Plain Street entrance). Fee for each class is $5 and is payable at the class. Instructor Susan Taylor has B.S. and Masters degrees from Indiana University in Fitness & Nutrition.
