Office of the Mayor

Welcome to La Porte!

I hope that you find our community inviting and that soon you will feel like part of our family. I couldn't be prouder to call La Porte home for so many reasons.

The people I've grown up with or met throughout my life here are some of the hardest working, kindest, generous, and most genuine people on earth. They are the heart of this community and make it the kind of place where you want to raise your family.

Starting on DAY 1 of my administration, I have pledged to create an environment that encourages our children and grandchildren to want to come home to work and live and raise their families.  I am committed to focusing on three priorities: 1) Create a new standard of excellence for our community  2) Champion a sense of pride and safety in our neighborhoods and 3) Create an environment that encourages economic development on both small and large scales.

Our lakes and the thirteen public parks throughout the city are at the center of our community life, whether you enjoy lazy summer afternoons on the beaches, fishing or skiing, walking or biking on our many trails and paths, youth and adult sporting events, many areas with playgrounds and shelters for picnicking, you will find it in La Porte.

There are festivals, celebrations, and special events throughout the year.  On July 4th, the City of La Porte becomes the Capital of Indiana each year, as our parade and celebration are the largest in the state, attended by 40,000, starting with the Jaycee's 4th Parade and culminating in a spectacular fireworks show.  The Arts in the Park events offer free outdoor concerts every Wednesday and Thursday evenings on the shore of Clear Lake in Fox Park.  Our Downtown Farmers Market has been operating since 1995 and continues to be a gathering place every Saturday morning from May through October.  We are privileged to have the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra and Little Theater offering live performances throughout the year.  As you can see, there is something for everyone!

Our schools are excellent with dedicated leaders who are constantly looking at ways to better the system and benefit our children in every way, through academics, sports, and the arts.  In La Porte we have a proud "Slicer" tradition, Once a Slicer, Always a Slicer".

I am proud to be a part of this community and I have been humbled to be elected as the Mayor.  I will continue to work daily to help move La Porte forward.

La Porte Proud!  - Mayor Tom Dermody
