Position:  Mechanic

Department: Park and Recreation   

                                                           Status: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt     

                                                           Wage: $20.35

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION.  Performs maintenance and repair of all equipment in the shop and field in the Department of Parks and Recreation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION.  Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Implements, schedules, and supervises preventative maintenance program for all Park and Recreation equipment.

Determines the most cost-effective maintenance and repair of equipment.

Responsible for general maintenance and repairs of mechanical and electrical equipment and vehicles. 

Requisitions parts, tools, equipment, and supplies necessary to perform duties.

Works directly with Foreman with potential concerns regarding employee misuse or abuse of equipment.

Makes recommendations on vehicle purchases for the Foreman and/or Director.

Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES.  There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS. 

Knowledge and/or Experience

An Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or two to four years’ equivalent combination of education and /or experience.  Mechanical Certification preferred.

Language Skills

Reads and understands charts and diagrams for the repair of engines and mechanical equipment; use of tools and devices; propose, prepare, and follow written and oral instructions; keep records; write correspondence; read and understand manuals and specifications.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees in the organization.

Physical Demands

Ability to repair equipment and work in awkward positions; ability to manually lift equipment parts weighing up to 75 pounds; will utilize a team lift approach for parts weighing more than 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes, or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS.  Valid Driver’s License and Mechanical Certification preferred.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS.  Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics, considerable knowledge of gas, diesel, and hydraulics for diagnostics, and repairs to mowing equipment, vehicles, and pick-up trucks

High school diploma or high school equivalency (HSE) and three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Generous benefit package offered, including 15 paid holidays and an employee clinic.
