Office of the Mayor

Welcome to La Porte!

Here in the City of La Porte, our mission is simple: to improve the lives of all who call this community home. From big economic development projects to filling even the smallest of potholes, our administration and the entire City team as a whole is committed to doing whatever it takes to make our residents proud.

It always comes back to our three guiding principles: set high standards, compete with and for the best, and expect to win. Here in La Porte, we don’t settle. We are relentless in pursuit of our goals and will stop at nothing to improve our community. We are La Porte Proud

Mayor's Corner

The City of La Porte is the place to be.

These are the words our team has lived by for the last five years. We’ve said it over and over, adopting it as the mantra that inspires and guides us through everything we do. From filling potholes to planning community events, it all circles back to those words – how is what we’re doing improving the lives of our residents and making La Porte the place to be?

Over time, we’ve watched our residents buy in and start believing this statement as well. We’ve witnessed the pride in our community be restored as residents flock to our downtown events, support our small businesses and wear “La Porte Proud” gear all over town. Visitors who come enjoy our lakes in the summer proudly don their “Livin’ the Lake Life” apparel and frequent their favorite local spots each summer. Our efforts to market the lakes and parks that make our community unique have earned us recognition throughout the greater tri-state area.

And boy, does word travel fast.

Our team was notified back in February that we had been nominated for USA TODAY’s ‘Best Small Town in the Midwest’ contest. Of all the communities throughout the greater Midwestern Region of the United States, La Porte was one of 20 small towns to be identified by a panel of journalists and experts as a worthy competitor for such a title. This nomination is not something we could have bought for ourselves, making it worth more than its weight in gold.

I'm very proud to say that La Porte took the No. 2 spot! We were in good company, competing against well-known summertime desitantions like Mackinac Island, Mich. (No. 10) and Lake Geneva, Wis. (No. 5).

Though I really wanted to snag that first place title – it’s just my nature – I have to acknowledge that to even be nominated in the first place is special. It means what we’re doing is working – the events, the follow-through on projects, the restoration of community pride. It’s all coming together, and people in and around our city and region are taking note. And they’re spreading the word.

La Porte really is the place to be.
